Maybe for xmas 2010…

I set out determined to crochet this cool, 60’s-ish throw for the holidays…

snowflake blanket

Pretty nice WIP, eh? Well, its still waiting to fulfill its Christmas destiny. The pattern is really good and easy to follow (got it from Crochet Today! magazine). When I got bored of crocheting the snowflake part, I would switch to the blue hexagon part and weave the ends together. I guess I got a little bored with both parts :(

But I do have some goals for this week:
1. Make a cardboard light box Done! Found easy directions here .
2. Sort yarn stash
3. Photograph 30% (or more!) of yarn stash
4. Finish other half of kitchen curtain
5. Post 3 sketches

I saw this photo on some website and it made me want to copy the pose…but somehow it evolved into Mita. Well, whatever. Anyway, the model had a cell phone in one hand and a dude’s tie in the other. I didn’t want Mita to be standing there empty handed so I put a soda can in one and a hamburger phone in the other because her face sorta looks like Ellen Page. You’d be surprised how little control I have over these things.

I’m always on the lookout for great repeating patterns I can use in my designs. I always wondered how to make those awesome hand-drawn style wallpapers without relying on a computer to do the math for me. Well, turns out you don’t need one (for the “math” part anyway). Design Sponge posted this great, simple tutorial on how to make your own pattern by hand, written by the talented Julia Rothman.

I like to describe DeviantArt as “MySpace for artists” …and not in a good way. It comes with all of the popularity contests and drama that most social networking sites have. However, something that most people don’t know about the site is that it has a relatively large collection of resources and custom interfaces that users upload themselves and post for free. With a little bit of searching, you can find a ton of stock photos, tutorials on how to use various programs, application resources (Photoshop brushes & actions, etc), and even some well designed fonts. Although none of it is intended for commercial use, I always like adding to my basket of fun tools that help me get inspired.

so much to do.

Only two more weeks until the wedding and I’ve been working hard getting the last few details in line. I’m excited that I bought a lot of our reception supplies on Etsy and made all of the paper pieces (invitation, program, etc) by hand with my little home design studio. I’m hoping once all this is done, I can start investing some time into making invitations and such for other people. Next month I will post all of my process sketches and (of course) the finished products of my wedding stationary set.

Since all this means that I have had almost no time to do any personal artwork, here are some birds I drew this year (yay?). The owl is my favorite from my birdie drawings and he’s hanging in our bedroom.

G.H.O.

The retro bird has been a good go-to when I need an extra element in some of my design sketches.

For the Monthly Gargoyles Contest. The theme was “x-goyles” or something. As you know I love X-Men and I love Gargoyles, so this was a no-brainer. Didn’t win but that’s fine because I pretty much love this picture. Below is the first sketch I did that wasn’t quite working out (or so I thought at the time). I love that one too.

gargoyle on fire

I used to intern at a place called Firewood. I liked the colors on their walls. This gargoyle was inspired by those colors. There are a couple more wall colors that I did not use. Thus, she will be getting a nifty counterpart soon. Firewood part DEUX!

Don’t forget your roots

In high school I got hooked on X-Men and was obsessed with designing my own characters. I loved (and still love) thinking of new powers or combinations of powers and, of course, their outfits. And I didn’t work alone. My best friend and I spent many hours coming up with back stories for our creations. And that’s something a best friend should do.

Below is just a sample of the doodles I made.
